Everyone wants great photos of their kids whether they are professionally done or you take them yourself. Professional portraits are well worth the investment as they can provide you with beautiful decor for your home and become family heirlooms you are sure to treasure for years to come. However, there are times you may just want to capture a few great shots yourself. So whether you are a scrap-booker, just got that new camera, or need some more photos for your facebook page here are a couple of quick tips to get some better photos or your kids.
Patience. Let me say it again PATIENCE. Let's face it kids are kids. They don't want to sit still and strike the perfect pose for you. Instead of ordering them to sit the right way or smile the right way, let them take the lead. Let them just be themselves and take a lot of shots - not every one will be perfect, some may be down right terrible but that's the great thing about digital photography, just press the delete button and the bad shots are forgotten.
Always have your camera at the ready. If your kids are anything like mine, you never know when they may be in the right mood to have a their picture taken. Don't worry if their hair isn't perfect or they aren't wearing the right clothes. Chances are if they are having fun and you capture a great expression, you will love the image even if they have a little messy face or are in a completely mismatched outfit.
Lighting is key. If possible, turn off that flash. Natural light is almost always more flattering. When indoors, get your child near a window - one that does not have harsh sunlight coming through (north facing is best). Don't have them facing the window but rather have them sit so the light hits the side of their face. For outdoor photos take pictures either earlier in the morning or late in the day when the sun is not as high in the sky. If you take photos in the middle of the day when the sun is high in the sky you will end up with a lot of squinty eyes and the raccoon eye effect (deep shadows under the eyes). If you need to take some photos in the middle of the day, try to find a shaded area.
Here are a couple of recent photos I took of mine. I am not a great fan of the Miley T-shirt but she was willing to cooperate for a few minutes and I know I will love looking back on these pictures with the missing tooth :)
